Whatever is

I work 3 night shifts in a week. There are night’s that I am about to ran out of patience taking care of my patients. Sigh! Then thoughts will flood my mind on how I ended up being a nurse. Service to humanity? I was only 16 when I entered nursing school, I don’t have any grasp what is service to humanity except for being a volunteer Vacation Church School teacher at my home church or a work camp which is a part of our church youth activity.

My freshmen clinical instructor once told our class during a return demonstration that if you took up nursing as a profession because of glamour then you are in the wrong profession, look at what you are holding. I looked at what I am holding…a bedpan. One bubble burst as early as first semester in nursing school.

It was a strict, demanding, rigid and rigorous training. I’ll ran out of adjectives to describe what I’ve went through. We are scholar of the masses. But I made it and now on my own I am taking care of someone’s life. It may be your grandparents, your parents, your siblings, an in-law, a relative or a friend. Every second counts. I can not succumb to physical exhaustion nor to my emotions. As the clock strikes at 0630 pm during a work night, I am present to be there for every patient assigned to me. As I asked for God’s guidance before I start my shift, I recite this verse
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”
